In our new age, the president should be chosen through a system in which everyAmerican vote carries an equal weight.

I support the idea of replacing the Electoral College through a constitutional amendment, even if I won with through electoral college. The replacement I believe should be either a direct national popular vote with a runoff when no candidate earns sufficient support, or a national ranked-choice voting system. Those that would argue that it gives less power to the states, forget the fact that this is just to elect a President, and that across state lines from all 50 states we are all proud Americans, and reduces the power of the current political party system, which produces unnecessary factionalism.

Because this change requires a constitutional amendment and ratification by the states, it obviously cannot be accomplished through executive order or an ordinary act of Congress, like a bill.

Election reform must also maintain security and public confidence. Every federal election should produce an auditable paper record, and states should follow strong minimum standards for post-election audits while retaining responsibility for administering their elections.

My policy:

• Pursue a Popular Presidential Election Amendment.

• Replace the Electoral College through constitutional means with a modern, new age system for Americans.

• Require auditable paper records in federal elections.

• Establish national minimum audit standards.

• Preserve state administration of elections.

• Protect access, security, transparency, and public confidence.
